Ring material: Platinum

Platinum is a standard material for engagement rings and wedding rings. Its beautiful silver-white color is captivating.

Today I will talk about platinum. I would like to explain in an easy-to-understand way the notations and characteristics that you will inevitably see when choosing a ring. I hope this will be helpful for you to have fun making your ring.

First, there are the commonly seen notations Pt900 and Pt950.
The number after Pt indicates the purity of platinum. Pt1000 means 100% platinum. However, 100% pure platinum does not exist, and the limit is 99.95%. For this reason, it is sometimes written as Pt999, and Pt1000 = Pt999.

Pt900...90% platinum
Pt950...95% platinum

Pt900

It is easy to process and is often used in Japanese rings.
It is lighter than Pt950, and the difference is especially noticeable when wearing a wide ring. It is also stronger because it contains a higher proportion of alloy (other metals mixed in) than Pt950 or Pt999.

Since the postwar period, when convenient machinery was not yet available, Japanese craftsmen have often used Pt900 for wedding rings, as it is a "material that is easy to handle with few problems." Pt900 is also used in the KARAFURU Transparent series.

Pt950

The amount of alloy (other metals mixed in) is less than that of Pt900, so it is less likely to cause metal allergies.
Many rings from overseas brands are made of Pt950. This is because the Platinum Guild International, the international public relations organization for platinum, has set Pt950 as the international standard for platinum jewelry.
However, this does not mean that the quality is not guaranteed unless the ring is Pt950 or above. There are various theories, but one is that gold rings are mainstream overseas and platinum is rarely used, which is why there is a trend to standardize on Pt950.

Hard Platinum

In recent years, more and more people are looking for delicate designs, but in these cases the ring needs to be strong.
Hard platinum is the perfect choice for this purpose. Platinum is mixed with a small amount of a metal called ruthenium, which instantly increases the strength of the platinum.
Hard platinum is often made from 95% platinum, 2-4% palladium, and 1-3% ruthenium. It hardens soft platinum rings of high purity, allowing you to enjoy the shine of high-purity platinum without reducing its purity.
At KARAFURU, we use hard platinum for our delicate engagement ring designs such as TSUBOMI and GAKU.
It was Louis Cartier, the third generation of Cartier, who first started using platinum in jewelry. He made thin, delicate jewelry using platinum's soft and stretchy properties, which made him very popular.

Platinum shines elegantly and sparkles. There are many different techniques that go into making it into a ring.
