Ring Material

Rings, especially wedding rings, are meant to last a long time.
Because it comes into contact with the skin, we want to pay attention not only to the design but also to the materials.

Factors to consider when selecting materials:

- Hard and durable, so it won't deform or get scratched in everyday life
・Less likely to cause metal allergies
- Resists discoloration from washing, sweat, or hot springs
Ease of resizing
・The value of the metal (purity, rarity, how it is processed)
-Easy to maintain on a daily basis

I think some of the reasons include:

Today we will introduce some of the most commonly used materials for wedding rings.

platinum

Platinum, also known as white gold, is the most popular material in Japan.
Beautiful, elegantly shining white platinum. Simple and easy to wear for both men and women.
Because it is a very rare metal, it is quite expensive. It is durable and does not rust easily, making it the perfect material for wedding rings.
To process it into jewelry, it is mixed with palladium, ruthenium, iridium, or other metals to increase its hardness. (Depending on the mixed metal, it may rust or cause allergies.)
Many people may have had their parents' wedding rings made of platinum. It is a coveted material.

Gold (yellow gold)

Gold has been used in ornaments and currency since ancient times, and is said to have an "eternal shine." It has the image of being the king of precious metals.
Generally speaking, gold refers to yellow gold.
It is a relatively soft material and is easy to decorate with fine details, so it has a high design potential. Like platinum, the higher the purity, the lower the strength, so K18 (75% purity) is often used for rings. (The remaining 25% is mixed with copper or silver.)
It blends well with Japanese skin and will not rust if used daily. It is also resistant to deterioration and discoloration, making it easy to use on a daily basis.
In Europe and the United States, it is a more popular material than platinum, and has a sense of luxury and exclusivity.
It seems that many KARAFURU customers also choose gold.

Rose gold

Pink gold has a beautiful pale pink color. Pink gold, which is becoming increasingly popular, gets its pink color from the high proportion of copper mixed into the gold. Copper is hard, so pink gold rings are hard and durable. This makes it difficult to process and can make it difficult to resize. Also, there is a risk of discoloration, so be careful when bathing in hot springs or sweating.
The soft pink color is reminiscent of a loving married life.

White gold

White gold, which has a silvery white color compared to platinum, is made by plating gold (an alloy of gold and palladium) with rhodium or other metals. It is half the weight of platinum, comfortable to wear, and reasonably priced. The plating may peel off over time, but it can be restored by re-plating. It is recommended for those who replace their rings every few years. You may want to be aware of allergies to the metals mixed in and the plating.

combination

If you don't want to limit yourself to one material, we recommend a combination.
Platinum and gold, platinum and pink gold are common combinations.
KARAFURU also offers combination rings that allow you to enjoy two different materials depending on your outfit and mood of the day.

PT950, PT900, and K18 are often used to indicate the material of a ring. What do these notations mean?

PT999...Platinum 99.9% = Pure Platinum
PT950...95% platinum
PT900...90% platinum

K24……100% gold = pure gold
K18……75% gold
K14...58% gold
K10...42% gold

The remaining percentage is called alloy, which is other metals mixed in to increase strength or add color.

Nowadays, there are more and more variations in ring materials, including titanium, zirconium, and stainless steel, which are less likely to cause metal allergies. In addition to your favorite color, enjoy making rings using materials that suit your lifestyle.
